Your Fertility Workup: Semen Analysis
A semen analysis is a sperm sample that is carefully looked at to see how much semen is produced, how much sperm is in the semen, if the sperm is shaped normally, and how well the sperm moves individually and can move in a forward motion.
What the Test Involves
You need to provide your doctor with a semen sample. This sample may be collected a number of ways:
Masturbation
Sex with withdrawal right before ejaculation
Sex with a condom
The most common way to collect the sample is masturbation. This will be the cleanest sample. You can do this in a private room at your doctor’s office, or, if you live close by, you may be able to do this at home. However, the sample needs to be delivered within an hour for testing.
Tips & Hints
For the best sample, do not ejaculate for 1 to 3 days before the test to ensure the sample is the largest quantity possible.
It’s also suggested not to drink alcohol or caffeine for up to a week before the test. If you take any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, make sure to tell your doctor to see if you should change your dosages leading up to the test. If you use any recreational drugs, like marijuana or cocaine, avoid these as well for up to a week beforehand.
If you produce the sample at home, keep the sample as clean as possible by having clean hands and using only the sample cup your doctor provides. Between collecting the sample and delivering it for testing, keep it as close to body temperature as possible by carrying it against your body (don’t let it go in direct sunlight and do not refrigerate it!).
