So I know I’m super late, but I felt that what I have to say is important enough to comment it.

First, please please please don’t put all of your eggs into one basket especially before you even meet any of the members of an organization!! You will likely have to go through a formal recruitment process and there is no guarantee that you will get the sorority you want. Additionally, going in wanting one particular sorority can actually hurt your chances of getting a bid. While the sorority might be the same, every chapter will be different campus to campus.

Going to a big school will make Greek life more competitive, and very expensive (especially if the organization owns a house).

Sororities are a lot of work. You’ll have to do service and participate in events and do a lot of other stuff. I’m a cheerleader, an RA, overloading on classes and the president of my sorority. A lot of my sisters are varsity athletes. So I personally think it is possible for you to manage band and a sorority, but everyone, every school, and every chapter is different!

A sorority is hopefully going to care about more than just your GPA and your service hours. Yes those things are important, but they also care about your personality and the things you’re interested in. So always just be yourself.

Sororities (in my experience) are not what you see in the movies. Maybe some of them are, but I’m glad mine, and the others on my campus, are not. We all care a lot about our philanthropies and do a ton of work for them. My organization has the highest GPAs on our campus. We definitely know how to have fun but our lives don’t revolve around partying. No one gets accepted or denied based on their outward appearances, which might happen in some other places unfortunately.

I’d also like to add that sororities are kind of like glorified clubs, and that is a common opinion among a lot of sorority girls that I know. I don’t think joining one is or should be a life changing thing that makes or breaks your college experience. You’re ultimately in college to get a degree, so yes have fun and experience as much as you can, but don’t let anything get in the way of your education. And that’s coming from the president of a sorority. I absolutely love my sisters and I am so so glad that I joined my sorority and took on my officer position, but I’m more than just a sorority girl.

This is just some food for thought based on my own personal experience. If you know what you want, go for it! Wishing you the best.
