Pumping early

Amber
I'm 29 weeks and my boobs have been leaking A LOT. When I say a lot, I mean I'm changing the nursing pads out like twice a day. I had an appointment yesterday and asked my doctor if it was ok to start pumping and freezing it, he said it would be ok. I heard that it could cause contractions and early labor though so even though he said it was ok to start pumping, something still scares me a little. Should I just deal with my leaking boobs 24/7 or should I pump and freeze since my doctor said its ok? I don't know.

I personally wouldn't pump and I've never seen a doctor say it was okay to pump before 38 weeks, if you want to save your milk, get some milk savers and freeze what you leak. ☺️

That will definitely throw you in labor it's not recommended that early. Not until 37+ weeks

As I midwife I wouldn't be recommending pumping until 37+ weeks. The stimulation from your breasts can cause uterine contractions and put you at risk of premature labour. Any literature also suggests that if the intent is not for induction then to stop stimulating the breasts even beyond 37 weeks if uterine contractions occur.  If you are leaking that much maybe you could find some quiet time through out the day to sit with a small cup and collect what comes out on its own. When my health service discusses antenatal expressing it only don't by hand not with a pump either. Good luck. By the sounds of it your baby is going to have a great supply of breast milk!!!

I wouldn't risk pumping that early as it can lead to early labour. I personally would wait until at least 37weeks.

Don't pump if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital. You're pumping colostrum which the baby needs the most right after birth and if you pump you won't have it. Also yes it can cause contractions.

There's a chance it won't... My sister pumped 10oz and stopped leaking then when baby was born she had none except what she pumped and her milk never came in. It can happen to some people

That's not true. Your body will keep making colostrum until after birth when the different stages of lactogenisis take place with hormone changes.
