You were obviously with them because you love and care about them. Something tragic like having a significant other dying should always make you sad. If it doesn't then you have to ask yourself why the hell were you even with them? If he beats you and you stay and you don't reach out for help. You can't really blame anyone other than yourself. Usually people who stay in abusive relationships are people who completely love the other person and think they will eventually change which would mean if they died you'd be sad.
