How long can you EBF for?

How long can a baby survive on just breastmilk? Is it necessary to introduce solids at 6 months? I'm planning on breastfeeding for at least a year and I would like to breastfeed only for as long as possible

"Food before 1 is just for fun." Nutritionally, breast milk is all your baby needs. With that being said, you may find it useful to introduce foods within that time frame (typically after 6 months) so that baby starts developing familiarity with other textures and tastes. You can also use BM to mix with cereal and veggies so that they're still getting it with food.

One lady in my La Leche group EBF'd two of her children for 1 year each to help prevent allergies. I met her youngest and he seems like he is healthy and has been eating solids for a couple months now. I read an article that said there may be some concern speech delay for children EBFing for 1 year. But I haven't read too much on it.

I think babies start to show a real interest in food around 6 months, so it will probably be hard after that point to not introduce any solids, but until 1 year their primary source of nutrition should be breastmilk. Do some research on "baby led weening"--I think it might appeal to you.

My boy is just 5 months and I'm doing research on introducing solids, myself.
