Having children in the delivery room?

Question

I was planning on talking to my doctor to get her thoughts. I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old. I was asked if we were going to have them in the room when their brother is born in August.  I had never thought about it before. But I think it would be a neat experience.  We would obviously keep them mostly sheltered from the gross details of child birth. What do you all think? Would you do it? Have you done it?

My mom said when she was 9 years old she saw her brother being born and "it was disgusting." Clearly she had me and also my little sister so it didn't scar her for life, but she said at the time she was a little traumatized! Lol But I personally think if you ask them if they want to be present and prepare them ahead of time for what they are going to see, it could be a beautiful experience.

I would leave the decision up to the kids. My son was 7 1/2 when his sister was born and we left it up to him. In the end, he decided he didn't want to be in there. She's now 7 months and he always tells me he wishes he could have seen her being born.

I think the most important thing to think about here is that any small amount of stress could be an issue during childbirth. That includes having small children running around. It's more about your health and having your delivery go smoothly.

I don't think I would want to but if they did I may concider it.
