Does the LH Surge get darker as ovulation day occurs? It isn't a match yet, but since it's close does that mean I should expect it in a day or so?

It should although some ladies get dark backs off and then gets darker to a positive. Basically they get close to a surge don't surge and surge later. just keep testing and maybe do 2x a day when u think you're getting close so you don't moss it.

Yes, it gets darker gradually (most of the time anyway), so probably soon!
