Under what circumstances do doctors order a NST?

Question

Under what circumstances/conditions do doctors order a non stress test? If I feel like I'm not sure if what I'm feeling are contractions, will my doc order a NST? 33w2d.

I have them twice a week for gestational diabetes.

They might. The only times I've had any NST is when I've mentioned contractions or less fetal movement.

I have two a week plus a bio physical profile ultrasound due to Down syndrome diagnosis and an AV canal heart defect diagnosis. Started at 32 weeks I'm now 37

NSTs are for high risk Mama's. I've had them with all 5 of my pregancies. They check to make sure baby is tolerating being inside. Usually they're combined with ultrasound to check growth, and fluid levels. 
If you're not high risk you shouldn't need them.

I have them twice a week along with biophysical profile due to lower fluid. Baby is very good at playing "hide the fluid."  I'm also on modified bed rest at home for the past 3 weeks & probably until I'm 37 weeks (next week).

I'm high risk due to my age (35), weight (237) and the fact that I was diagnosed with several blood clots in my left calf, just a couple weeks into my pregnancy (currently on blood thinners- injections).  My baby also has an umbilical cord that doesn't go directly into the placenta, but first enters the uterus and then the placenta.  For these reasons, I'm assuming, I'm having NST's done twice a week beginning at 35wks (three weeks from now).

I have to have one once a week until I have the baby due to elevated BP and contractions.. I am 34 weeks 3 days..
