Middle name question..

Out of curiosity, are middle names really important? I feel like ppl search so hard for the perfect middle name and once the baby is here, you hardly hear of the middle name anymore. I have never heard anyone call me or my siblings by their middle name. I dont even think many ppl even know my middle name. Is it just me or are they made big deals for nothing?
