Do antibiotics cancel out birth control?

I get UTI's a lot because I never have to pee after sex and I'm on antibiotics right now and my doctor said that he would give me a low dose antibiotic to take after I have sex but will that cancel out my birth control?

Nope! General antibiotics do not.

Only rifampicin and rifabutin do, they're used to treat tuberculosis.

There are only specific antibiotics that affect your birth control. You can find their names on the leaflet that comes with your prescription or ask the pharmacist which ones they are so you know when to use back up. Not every antibiotic will effect modern birth control.

I just finished my pharmacology class (nursing student) and there are manyyyy medications, including antibiotics, that decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and it is recommend to use extra protection (condoms) throughout the course of your antibiotics.

Ask your pharmacist. According to research I've done only strong antibiotics can affect your BC. But the only person who can give you a better answer is your doctor or pharmacist because they can see which BC you're taking and which antibiotic you're taking and go from there.
