Can I get in trouble?

So my husband asked his friend to move in with us about 3 months ago.  so we could pay less on bills. He moved in and we were all supposed to go work at the same place until he got fired because he screwed up. Well he hasn't gotten a job and hasn't payed for rent or food. He's just been living off us. Well my husband said he has to leave and he can either pay us or give us his computer. Well he said he would give us his computer. Now he saying we stole it from him and didn't know he had to pay rent. He's said he's going to call the cops. We have nothing in wrighting and we have the computer which he gave us. I'm just wondering what the cops with make us do.

Honestly I'd just give him his computer and cut my losses, or lack thereof really. We were screwed by 2 "friends" last year and it will not happen again, believe that.

Do you want to do the moral thing or what's right (in my opinion)? The moral thing would be to give him his computer and have him leave the premises asap. I personally would keep it and find a way to sell to cover the loss accruded due to his lack of keeping his word. He has no proof that you have possession of the laptop and would have to go to great lengths to do so. Ultimately it's up to you. You're not going to jail over a freakng laptop. My mom always says when someone screws you over be thankful that it happened for cheap. Now you know what kind of tool he is and you never have to help him again.

What a dick. No good deed goes unpunished, which is sad but this is why I stopped doing favors for people.

By the way, a verbal agreement still counts however it'll probably end costing you more than the computer is worth so just give it back and kick his ass to the curb. Even better, get a restraining order.

The cops will make him prove its his computer probably via receipt and if it is then you will be made to give it back.  If nothing is in writing then you are pretty screwed, mates or not always write up a contract.

Since its too late for that could he prove the computer belonged to him in the first place? I believe possession is 9/10ths the law and he would have to prove you "stole" it. 
Has he already moved out? If it seems like there will be a problem I'd kick him out, and if the cops tell you too, give him back the computer and take the loss. But I think it would be hard to prove. My guess is he is just threatening to call the cops anyway.

If he can't prove its his computer with a receipt or VIN or whatever it's called number, the police won't do shit about you having his computer. For example: our house was robbed a few months ago and our computer/ps4 was stolen and they wouldn't even check the pawn shops or anything because we didn't have the VIN (or whatever it's called) number or a proof of purchase. Keep the computer!

He has to prove the item was his by a receipt or something. If you have nothing in writing then I'm afraid there's not much you can do. If he can't prove it's his you guys might be able to keep it. That's the problem with friends and verbal agreements you never know who these people turn out to be.
