IUD questions

I've had my iud for a little over a year now. I never got it checked after I had it put in (irresponsible I know). Ever since I get random really sharp cramps at irregular times that only last a few minutes, stopped having periods for a while, now I have periods that consist of just barely spotting for a couple of days. Should I get it checked? I'm worried about the cramping.
