How do you know you have PCOS?

Question

I have read about it a lot. I have few of the symptoms that I read about so far: chronic super irregular periods, chronic painful periods (I used to faint from period pain, went to the ER multiple times for pain relief), multiple miscarriages, difficulty getting and staying pregnant.
I have never been tested for it though. What were your experiences in figuring out you have pcos?

You may or may not have cysts on your ovaries, like I have, and extremely irregular periods but, I forgot the last symptom that my gyn told me makes it obvious you have pcos. Best thing to do is go and get a check up.

I didn't know until my gyn from the fertility center confirmed I had pcos. I've known it for a half a year now and I'm almost 31..

At your doctors office, they can do a blood test to test your testosterone levels because in PCOS your body produces too much estrogen which gets converted to testosterone. So if you have PCOS, you likely have high levels of testosterone.

Sounds like u do. However, the only ACURATE  answer to your question is:
You need to go to an obgyn and have yourself checked. The doctor will be able to draw blood, ask questions, check you, etc etc. The doctor will be able to read your blood results and give a proper diagnosis.

Thank you all very much for your insights. I have had irregular and long cycles as long as I can remember. My cycles are anywhere between 28 days (when on the pill) to 70 days (longest cycle I've ever had) long. My periods are relatively long (8 to 14 days long), heavy and painful. I will ask my doctor when I see her on my first appointment for this pregnancy and hopefully she can let me know. I don't wish that I have PCOS but it would put my mind to ease to know the reason behind my difficulties in getting pregnant and my multiple miscarriages.

My diagnosis was by the symptoms and not any particular test. I did have labs done and they showed high cholesterol and testosterone. Irregular periods, excess facial hair and anxiety were among my symptoms, along with insulin resistance resulting in acanthosis nigricans, a weird skin condition that causes patches of dark and dry skin. Some women experience thinning hair as well.

I didn't know I had PCOS until I went to the gynecologist. She did an ultrasound and saw the cysts on my ovaries. I too have irregular periods.
