Do i count the couple days b4 ur period when u just spot as part of ur period?

My doctor has always said to count from the first spot, but I have seen where others are told to count from when a proper flow begins. I don't normally have much spotting before, so I am not left wondering if it is a AF or not. Have you been able to ask your OB/GYN?
