Umbilical cord clamps and funny smells?!

Hey mommys,

I just had a question about umbilical cords. This is my first child and have taken care of new borns before. But my daughters cord is still on (she a week old) an it smells so bad is it suppose to? an the hospital sent us home with the plastic clamp on her umbilical cord. Is that normal? I'm taking her to the Dr tomorrow.

The smell is normal, it's basically dying flesh. If it starts oozing anything though then there might be a problem. My boy's still hasn't fallen off yet but it's looking loose.... They did remove the clamp before we left the hospital though.

My hospital actually recommends against using the alcohol around it. I used it with my first and his took forever to fall off. I didn't touch my daughter with it and it came off the following Monday after she was born. (Which was on a Wednesday.) also, my hospital removed the clamp before sending us home, so I'm not sure what that's about. See about having it removed tomorrow.

My baby book says a foul smell is normal, but if it gets really awful to talk to the doctor. It also recommended cleaning with rubbing alcohol at every changing.

Baby girls fell off this morning, thank goodness..it was all I could smell on her 😳 All better now!!

Totally normal. You can take a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it and swab it to help clean it and dry it out to help with the smell. The clamp can come off now...they should have told you that.
