Banana pudding question? Random, but I need advice!

My boyfriend wants me to make banana pudding for his upcoming graduation/birthday. I normally make it quite simply, everyone loves it, but it's considered the "instant" way. Instant pudding that's fancied up with whipped topping and sour cream and a few other things and bananas and wafers...I also know how to make it homemade but I've never tasted it. With the homemade pudding and meringue on top and put in the oven ect. Has anyone tried both and have any opinions on what TASTES better? I'm conflicted on which one to do and it'll be for about 50 people lol any opinions or tips or advice would be lovely!
