Is it evil to separate us with the crib rail at this point?

Rainbow
Our baby is a year and a half. We've been cosleeping with her in our bed but we started having her sleep in her crib with the side taken off and pushed up to our bed. After struggling with her night waking and yelling at us and crawling all over us at all hours of the night, we put up the side of the crib so she can't get to us. We've been sleeping better and she's been sleeping through the night more often but it feels evil, especially when she wakes up and cries. I feel like maybe she doesn't understand why she can't get to mommy and I feel like an asshole. But we just can't go on like this anymore. We're exhausted and I need her to sleep.
