I'm a 5th grade teacher.

Be prepared for long hours as a college student. I spent at least 2 semesters in classrooms doing observations. One of those was my student teaching semester. It's a full time, unpaid position. You are expected to do all of the duties of a classroom teacher.

Get a job/volunteer somewhere working with kids! The boss of that place will hopefully be a great candidate for a letter of recommendation.

My college required minors. I minored in something I love - social studies. You'll have to take a handful of classes to receive a minor, so choose something you enjoy.

Be prepared for 4 years of classes and a semester of student teaching.

Most important piece of advice -  keep a folder of drawings, notes, cards, etc that you receive from your kids. When you have a bad day, open that folder to remind yourself the reason why you do what you do. :)

The process varies depending on your state, but generally you will need to get a BS in Childhood Education, take several certification exams, and complete several internship experiences in order to receive your initial teaching certificate. You will also have to complete workshops on child abuse identification, discrimination, etc. Once you have your initial certificate you are free to apply and accept a classroom position. In NY you are required to earn your Masters within 5 years or lose your certificate. You must also complete professional development hours to maintain your certificate.

Make sure you have a good advisor at school. They will be able to walk you through the process entirely. Be your own best advocate. I also suggest that you pick up as many certifications as possible. While you want to teach in a grade 1-5 classroom, that might not be an option depending on the market where you live. NYS is highly competitive right now, with many qualified teachers unemployed. Picking up special ed or literacy will help you stand out of the crowd. You might also discover a new passion. I swore up and down that my ideal position was a general ed classroom between grades 3-5. I ended up teaching in a special education classroom and LOVE it. I am currently a second year teacher.

I'm a teacher. I went to school for four years and got an elementary ed degree -I took two licensure tests and applied to jobs. I teach 5th grade and have taught for four years. I have been back to get my master's in elementary ed and I am currently getting my master's in school administration. It's a fairly easy process, but the work is hard, hours are long and rewards are great.  Make sure you really want to do this.

Long long long hours of crying, sweat, blood, tears and glitter lol you won't be able to work a lot once you get into phase 2 so be prepared to be really poor lol and tired. So so tired.
