Ripping up the Pope

I know this one is a few decades old, but I wanted to hear what everyone thinks.

In 1992 Sinead O'Connor ripped up a picture of the Pope while singing War by Bob Marley in protest against the sexual abuse in Catholic churches.

Your thoughts on it? Was it really that controversial? Did she deserve to have her career pretty much ruined for it?

My personal opinion: I'm Christian. And I freaking love what she did. Even now, too many sexual abuse cases are hidden by the Catholic Church and it's unjust and awful.
