Should people who drink and drive be charged with attempted murder??

I'm sure I will get a ton of flack for this, but oh well. I have a huge problem with drinking and driving. I have zero respect for anyone who does it. I personally feel that if you choose to do so, and you are caught you should be charged with attempted murder. What are your thoughts??

No. Attempted murder wouldn't be the appropriate crime to charge with. Drinking and driving that doesn't result in injury or death is negligent but doesn't fall within the lines of attempted murder, either. Should someone die as a result of it then theres vehicular manslaughter.

Driving drunk is not attempted murder. Drivers caught driving under the influence should definitely face huge consequences. My friends' dad was murdered by a drunk driver that got off with a slap on the wrist. But someone actually died in that instance. Driving drunk is stupid, and illegal, but if you're not driving around trying to run into someone, no, it's not attempted murder.

The law does not reflect individual morals, attempted murder is only applicable with intent. So if I stab someone trying to kill them but miss any major ataries or organs and they live, I attempted murder. Without considering intent almost anything could be spun as being dangerous to others and there for attempted murder. I think it's necessary for people to remove their emotions from the law.

Yes.  I get that it's extreme, but if that drunk person were to hit someone, chances are they would kill someone.  Also, with such an extreme charge, less people would probably drink and drive.

As someone who was in the passenger seat of the drunk driver that crashed when I was younger, I vote no. After we managed to get out of the flipped vehicle, the driver immediately collapsed on the ground and was swaying back and forth, saying how scared he was, that he put us in danger, that he should've died. It hurt to see such a huge, strong man act like that, and the amount of encouraging we had to do just to get him to walk so we could get to safety was extensive. The drivers can understand the damage they've done, and sometimes have a permanent reminder as is. Look up Kevin Brooks, he explains it well.

I feel that they should lose their drivers license permanently and be given jail time. However I don't believe being charged with murder makes sense. While there is a risk that you could kill someone the charge doesn't fit at all. Yes it could happen but it could also happen with many things. A bathtub not cleaned after an oil bath could be viewed as murder attempt for not cleaning it for future people? It doesn't fit does it. Yes its negligent but its entirely likely that nothing will happen.

Why are people voting no?? I realize that they didn't hit anyone, but they could have. Everyone knows that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous. What's the difference between that and hiring a hit man to kill your wife?? Maybe the hit man doesn't do it. You will still be charged with attempted murder. Ahouldnt drinking and driving be the same??

Should they be charged attempted murder? No. Should they have more serious charges than what they are, well actually, worse consequences, yes. I feel that they are treated lightly. But attempted murder is a bit harsh. But so is getting behind a wheel hammered, and hitting someone. This is actually a touchy subject.
