Febrile seizure
I created this group because these are scary, and sometimes we need some reassuring that we are doing great and that everything is going to be ok, please share your story, here is mine:
Ok, so some of you may have been told about these, others like myself, may have never even heard of them.
My son has had about 6 fevers in his young life, reaching up to 103. On sunday, he woke up from a nap and started throwing up for the first time in his life, so of course I panicked. We took him to the ER because we felt like something was wrong, we were sent home (of course) the next day, he continued to throw up and have diarrhea, I called the pediatrician to make an appointment and they told me he didn't need one. His temp was low enough, he would be fine.
I put my son down for a nap because he was really fussy and tired (also weird even with a fever my son never acts this way) about 30 minutes after he fell asleep I heard him scream on the monitor so I was headed to his room to check on him, I stood by the Door to listen because he got quiet, I heard shuffling so I cracked the door and saw him legs jerking back and forth, I opened the door and rushed to his crib and his arms were extended, his back was arched and his eyes were in the back of his head, he was making the worst hiccuping sound that sounded like he was trying to breath so I grabbed him fast and started screaming ( mind you, I still did know what was wrong, so you can imagine my panic) I rushed him to the front door and my sister in law told me what to do every step of the way, she called 911 while I hovered over my son screaming and begging him not to leave me! I thought I was losing my son whole heartily. His seizure slowed down and he stopped breathing and it looked like the life was draining out of him. I about lost it at that moment. Sense I didn't know what they were, I tried opening his mouth to perform cpr. Luckily my sil told me to stop that it was a seizure and he didn't need it (talking to dispatch) he gasped for air and started screaming, he seized for 20+ minutes. This was, so far, the worst day of my life. I know now that they are harmless but sense I had no knowledge of them, I was completely thrown off guard. I could have hurt my seizing son if my sil wasn't there because I wasn't aware these were a thing. I thought he was choking or his heart was stopping and I needed to save him when in reality, I needed to stay calm and let it happen. How could I watch my son go through that for the first time and NOT think he needed to be saved.
Anyways, I just wanted to share my story, even though it's rare, happens in 2-5% of children, they still happen and I want you mommies to be educated on them in case they do occur, you do not react the way I did. Hope non of you gave to experience it and major kudos to those mom's who do have them present in your child's life. Being a mom is hard they say, well, they are correct.
Btw, my son's temp only reached 101.5 for his seizure to occur
