I need to leave

I need to leave my SO I can't take it anymore. I'm stupid enough to believe people can change their ways. I live in California he is mentally and physically abusive not all the time but when he gets mad. He's bipolar he needs help and chooses not to get it . Now I need to do what is best for me and my kids . I got to school full-time but I'm not working. I need some where to go but IDK where to start. Welfare doesn't want to help me. I need to leave now not later. My kids deserve a better environment. Please any ideas where I can go ?? Shelters in southern California .. I looked on Google but not really sure where to start . Please help
