Screening testing

The doctor had asked if I wanted the test to see if my baby has Down syndrome. I said yes, and When I made the appointment the lady called it screening testing. Is that the same thing??? And also, how do they test that, is it and ultrasound?? If it's an ultrasound is it the kind where they go up my vagina or where they just go across my stomach??
