Reusing crib mattress?

I read something about reusing crib mattresses can cause sids. Has anyone else heard this? We still have our sons mattress from 4 years ago that we have kept in his closet. It's in great condition and I would love to use it for our new baby but not if it could hurt her. Would love some thoughts...

We got given a whole leaflet from our health visitor (we are in the UK) all about not reusing a mattress as there is an increased risk for SIDS, I hadn't thought about it before but we went and got a new one for the Moses basket and it wasn't expensive so worth it I guess 😊😊

I'm using the mattress from my crib from when i was a baby so it's 26 years old and was used for me and my 3 siblings.  
I did put the other foamy type mattress that came free with my crib order on top of it just so that its less distance I have to bend down to get the baby out of the crib

Yes, I heard there is a higher risk from using old mattresses!!! Something about gasses emitted from the material inside or something?!?!

I'm reusing the crib mattress from my 5 year old. She hardly got to use it and it's in great condition. As far as sids.. The baby won't be sleeping in the crib for a while anyway and we did get a new cradle mattress.  So for me I'm less worried about it.

I never heard of that. We are reusing one from 4 years ago that my cousin had. It's in great shape so I don't see a reason to not. The main thing with mattresses is that they should be firm and fit snug into the crib without space between the mattress and crib sides.

I heard it's the same with the crib.. Do not reuse of its 10 years or older.. 4 years should be fine..

I've never heard of this. We're reusing the mattress that was our 4 year olds too. He just stopped using it a couple months ago when we bought him bunk beds. It's still in great condition 👌🏻

I've never heard of that but my 3.5 year old will be using her crib mattress in her toddler bed because it fits perfectly for her and baby is getting a new mattress. I would think as long as mattress is still firm not sure why it wouldn't be ok maybe try asking the pedi?

That's because the mattress has to be a firm surface, and when it's used it loses that firmness and that's why it increases the risk for SIDS.
