Relationship Help

So I've been talking to this guy and things started getting serious between us. He told me he liked me and wanted to be with me other day we were talking about how we feel about each other and he's been saying we will talk about it in person. I just found out he has a girlfriend in the army. He tells me we can just be friends and he's ashamed and embarrassed of himself but you can't be just friends with someone you like it doesn't work like that.  I like him a lot but I don't know what to do. Please someone help me. And I WILL NEVER CHEAT ON SOMEONE OR TRY TO BE WITH A TAKEN MAN EVEN THOUGH SHES FAR AWAY
