Do you take your tampon out before you poop?

Okay so I know a lot about these things and I'm still confused on this. Are you supposed to take out a tampon if you have to poop? It is bad to leave one in? I got myself into a situation the other day where I had just put in a tampon and then 5 minute later had to poop and I didn't know if I should've kept it in or took it out, I took it out and that crap was painful because it was dry.
