Directions for Glucose test. To fast or not?

I would like to see what Dr's are saying to their patients about this.  Any input on why some say to fast and some say don't?  This is not about avoiding sugary foods before the test (which is the best thing to do) but about totally fasting.

You should specify in the poll whether you mean for the one hour glucose screening test or the 3 hour glucose tolerance test. The official recommendations state that a fast is NOT needed for the one hour (despite the fact that many practices tell you to fast for the one hour) but it is required for the 3 hour test. My midwife told me to eat eggs and drink water before the one hour. I failed so I had to take the 3 hr. For the 3 hr, I couldn't eat or drink even water (or chew gum or mints) after 10 pm the night before the test, which I took at 6:30 am.

My doctor didn't tell me to fast or anything before drinking it but told me that after drinking, not to eat or drink anything until I came in for my appointment to take blood.

I was told that with the one hour test you do not have to fast but if u fail and have to do the 3 hour test you have to fast then. My doctors changed it to one 2 hour test and for that you have to fast and if u fail you have GD no more testing is needed.

For the one hour my doctor told me to not eat for two hours before. I was dizzy when I got to the hospital, but I passed.

Not exactly fasting, but only eat proteins for about 8 hours beforehand. They told me to have bacon and eggs and black coffee or water.

I wasn't told either way so I had some Special K cereal for breakfast and walked over to take my test. I haven't been wanting sugary foods during this pregnancy anyway so I don't think I would've made a different eating decision. I've mainly been wanting meat and limes or tacos, whichever sounds more appetizing lol

I manage labs for a living and mostly leave it up the the provider whether they want a fasting one hour versus non fasting. It has a ton to do with patient population. If we have a practice that doesn't understand nutrition, it's easier to get accurate results from a fasting. Sadly, the diet of most of our pregnant patients is atrocious and there's so much sugar in American diets that it's hard to explain what is appropriate foods to eat and what isn't. Requesting patients fast just takes out that variable and reduces the amount of three hour tests we need to run because someone downed a Mountain Dew and giant bowl of chocolate chip granola that morning.

Personally, I ate some cheese and nuts prior to my one hour and passed with flying colors.

I asked and she told me to avoid anything with a lot of sugar but said I didn't have to do anything too specific. But the day I took my test my husband and I were clearing out our garage and basement to get rid of all the useless stuff and I had resee puffs in the morning and a peanut butter sandwich around 2pm. And my test was at 3:15. Carbs can mess up your sugar and I think peanut butter probably wasn't the best choice lol
But I passed with a 123! :)
