Has anyone ever moved states?

My SO and I are thinking about moving states (somewhere about 15 hours away) once the little one is a few years old. I've lived in the same city my entire life, though, and he moved around a lot as a child but they were poor so all of their things fit in their small car so I have no idea how to go about it. I have some questions if any of you could answer any of them that would be great. 
-how many times did you visit the place you were planning to move to? Plane tickets and that long of car rides are expensive but I also want to have a good idea of where I'm staying. 
-how did you move? Did you fly or did you get a uhaul and drive everything there? 
-how did you go about moving in, getting new jobs, and meeting people?

I grew up in North Dakota and needed a change of scenery when I was 20 I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. A year after that I moved to Wisconsin with my now Husband. We are still in Wi. Moving was the best decision I've ever made. It gave both of us a chance to get rid of all the negative people in our lives.

My husband and I are moving from Florida to Colorado in a couple of weeks. I'm going to be staying home once the baby is born but my husband has a job lined up. We chose Colorado because I'm actually from there, and my husband visited with me and loves it.

My parents are flying down here and are helping us drive there. We are driving my car, and getting a small u-haul with a trailer on the back for my husbands car (because it's a pretty crappy car and honestly wouldn't make the drive)

I'm 18 weeks and we should be there by the time I'm 21 weeks! Good luck to you!

2 months ago we moved from Ohio to Florida. I've never left Ohio before so we flew down to see if I'd like it... It's such a big change! Needless to say, I liked Florida so we went back home and started to pack. We've got 2 kids (ages 4 & 5), 2 dogs, and a hamster--- it was definitely a "crazy" drive.

Instead of wasting money on a UHaul, we bought a 16 ft cargo trailer for $3000. When we got here, we sold the trailer and got our money back (that was a lifesaver!) It gave us money to live on until we found jobs.

I suggest you do your research. Laws, housing, job market, etc. before taking off. Every state is different and it'll take time to learn everything.

Like I said though, we've been here for a couple of months now and we're still trying to get "settled in"- it doesn't feel like home yet but we're getting there. Change isn't easy sometimes....

We moved three states (PA to northern VA) with 2 kids (they were almost 2 and 6 months at the time). We researched the cost of living and the city online first, then DH started applying for jobs. He did phone interviews and skype interviews until he found somewhere he really liked, then scheduled an in person interview. Next we drove down as a family for 3 days (it's about 300 miles each way) and explored a bit while he interviewed and got a feel for the area. Then once he accepted an offer, we went back for another trip to get him a room share. He stayed in that for 6 weeks while I stayed back home and got our house packed and he looked for apartments for all of us.  He would drive home every other weekend and sent me video tours of the apartments he'd seen. After we narrowed it down to 3 places, I drove back down to see them in person. We signed a lease and then rented 2 uhaul trucks to move everything we owned. It took a full weekend to move everything and then I sort 2 more months driving back a lot to rent out our old house.

As for meeting people- we made it a priority to find a church first thing, then spent a lot of time outside at our new place so that we could meet the neighbors. We were moving into the DC area so we also joined a new resident group and a moms group on meetup.com.

We moved 3 times between 3 states in 2 years. Each time we moved for a job for either me or my husband. First was from Florida to North Carolina, we went up twice to house hunt, but I had been up several times on my own staying in a hotel for work so I knew the area a bit. We relied on my coworkers and Internet forums for information about which city close to my office to live in. Meeting people was hard, we both grew up in Florida and had so many friends from all our years here. We met people through our awesome neighbor. We used our cars and  moving company to move there. The second move was from NC to Maryland. We only went once to house hunt because of timing and finances. It was a mistake, Baltimore was horrible and we should have moved to the suburbs. But we used a moving company again and our cars to get there. We left MD and moved back to FL 6 months later and this time packed a Uhaul ourselves that towed my husband's car while I followed in my car. We made friends in Baltimore via neighbors again and being friendly at the dog park and while out and about.

My husband and I moved twice out of state. The first time he went down before I did for job interviews and stayed in hotels for a couple of days. He sent his resume absolutely everywhere before heading down. Once he got a job offer he was able to secure an apartment for us. He ended up moving three weeks before I did and we moved in two stages. He moved and the bed and necessities went with him. When I moved down he drove back up and we rented a uhaul. We also used the move as a reason to get rid of a ton of things that we didn't absolutely need just to make it easier
