Can I get pregnant even if I took plan B?

Question

My husband and I had unprotected sex and then took plan B the morning after. It was a week before I ovulated and a few days after I finished my period. Now my period is due in 10 days. Is there any possibility that I could be pregnant? I regret taking plan B and I am sort of hoping for a miracle. How does plan B work? Was I supposed to get my period right away?

You certainly can get pregnant after taking plan b, but it is very unlikely. Plan b works in a few ways. First, it acts like oral birth control in that it stops you from ovulating that month if you haven't already, so there is no egg for the sperm to meet. Secondly, if you have ovulated it thickens the vaginal discharge and changes its ph balance so it is not only harder for sperm to swim through it is also a very acidic, toxic environment. Lastly, if the egg and sperm have already met, resulting in a fertilization, plan B works by making the lining of your uterus very hard for the fertilized egg to implant to your uterus. This is key for a healthy pregnancy, and this shedding of your uterus lining  is also why breakthrough bleeding is a common symptom after taking plan B (kind of like a mini period). So, these three methods together give you a very low likelihood of becoming pregnant, however miracles do happen, that is why the success rate is not 100%. Hope this helps, and good luck!
