I need help

Me and my finance have been trying to get pregnant for a year now my periods are irregular and it's so hard for me to track my ovulation I talked to my doctor and she said its because they are irregular I'm not ovulating normally I  don't know what to do I've tried taking ovulation test but I don't even know when to start can someone please help I'm tired of taking negative test :(
