Statutory rape, is it really that bad???

I'm not talking about pedophiles. I'm talking about an 19 year old getting arrested for sleeping with a 16 year old. Should it really be called rape, if the girl was willingly sleeping with him?? I feel like they should call it something else, or maybe not even make it illegal at all. Thoughts??

Statutory rape means minors having sex. Either with a legal adult or another minor. Consent has little to do with it. If there is no consent that simply makes it rape. A fourteen year old can consent to sex with an other fourteen year old and it still be statutory rape.

I think it's a fair law. Parents don't want their 16 year olds sleeping with a 21 year old or an 11 year old. If they are a child it is the parent's decision AND duty to guide, protect, and give consequences. Maybe we wouldn't have so many pregnant children if more parents didn't say, "well, kids will do whatever they want. Nothin we can do."

My six year old wants cookies for dinner. When he's sixteen he probably won't want to go to class, or might smoke pot, or want to sleep with what ever her name may be. That doesn't mean I'll stand back and say, "well, nothing I can do about it."

The truth is maybe there really is nothing I can do about it at that point other then throw in the towel on parenthood. Oh wait! No! There is something I can do! Not feed him Oreos! I can be sure my son attends school! I can teach him about the dangers of drug use and sex at a early age! Then, if some older/younger sexual partner comes along I can evaluate it and put an end to it if need be.

I think we hear these ridiculous stories about kids having sex with other kids close to their age because some parents want their children to chose a better mate when they are older. Wth did any of us know before the age of 25-30?

Take it from someone who was pregnant at 14. It's a great idea for kids to be guided to not have sex. Even if he's/she's cute and only a few years older/younger. Its rape because a child can't possibly be fully awear of the part of themselves that is taken. Even when they think they know it all!

If its consentual I dont think it should be called rape. If a person is able to drop out of school at 16 they should be allowed to be intimate with whoever they please.

The percentage of ppl arrested for statutory rape that fall into the category of the youngest person being right on the edge of consent laws and the oldest being just over 18 is very small and it being a healthy relationship is small. In most cases like that no one would be charged bc a DA wouldn't prosecute.

As for just the law itself I think it has lots of merit and while not perfect serves its purpose of protecting and getting justice for a lot of children that are taken advantage of.

I think it's pretty stupid. There are 16 and 19 year olds that do date, and they do have sex and they both want to. I think it shouldnt be a law. What's the difference b/t 14 and 17 yr old having sex

I think within a certain age limit it shouldn't be counted at statutory rape.  If a 19 y/o is with a 13 y/o... Yes, that should be... But if it's a 17 y/o with a 19 y/o... No.

I like how the law works in TX... Age of consent is 17, but if people are within 3 years of each other, they generally won't get charged with anything.

(But I'm all for sex only after marriage, so I don't condone premarital sex at any age haha ;D)
