Is it weird for boys to be interested in how periods work

My friends and I were in math class talking about what you should use on your firs period. Then the boy next to me started to ask questions like, did you have your period yet? How does it work? Does it hurt? Etc. I thought it was cool he was trying to educate himself. My friends got weird about it.
