Blood test to determine gender?!?

It has been 11 years since my last baby and things are much different... Has anyone heard about the blood test to determine gender? Will insurance cover it? Is it accurate?

Around 10 weeks or so you can have Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing done as an early screening for certain disorders like Downs Syndrome, and while they are checking your blood you can elect for them to do a chromosome analysis to determine the gender. Depending where you live it may not cost you anything. For example, where I live, in NY, the State covers the cost for the testing, and there is no additional fee to determine gender. I had it done my last pregnancy and plan to do it this time around too!

My insurance covered it and I was not high risk (at the time) or over 35. It all depends on your insurance. Just be careful because if they don't cover it at all it can be very expensive. My insurance papers showed it cost them about $11,000.

In Canada we do the testing for Down syndrome and other abnormalities but they don't offer the gender part! :( I asked and my doctor hadn't even heard of it before.

From what I know, most insurance will cover it if you are high risk (over 35 years old).  I think it's called harmony genetic testing or something.  It's a full genetic work up for the trisomies and gender.  Since I'm 38 I can't wait to get it done.  I believe I can get the blood drawn at 10 weeks and it takes one to two weeks for results.

My friend had it done, she had to pay extra for the sex but it wasn't a ridiculous amount!
