Doula: Who will be hiring one?

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but is anyone considering hiring a doula? My SO most likely won't make it to the birth, so I'm considering hiring a doula. I have literally just been introduced to this concept (first-time mom here lol). I have not heard any horror stories so far...

I would say yes if your husband or mother/sister/friend can't make it. Personally my husband and mom were big helps. I also delivered my son with a midwife and I asked her about one and she said she would be with me most of the time so I didn't need one and she was right, the midwife (on call, not her) was there with me the large majority of the time unlike a doctor who isn't there but periodically. So that is my plan this time. 
I also caution you because when I went to my midwife appointment last week my nurse was telling me about a lady who had a doula and the doula told her to basically lie to the midwives and tell them her water hadn't broken, and so by the time her husband made her come in she was past crowning and had the baby at the reception desk of the midwives office. So just trust your doctor too, doulas aren't midwives/doctors.

I cannot afford one and have a few friends who want to be one so I'm letting them "practice" on me. Also do a meet up if your thinking of it. Only take someone on of you feel really comfortable with them.

I wanted to have one beings it's our first baby, but my husband said some really terrible things about me wanting one so now I'm not 😩 they are great coaches and will really know how to keep you as comfortable as possible if your wanting to have a natural birth! I've only ever read good things about doulas!
