Please answer

Okay so I started my squats last night and I'm not sure if I'm doing them right, I watch myself in the mirror to make sure it pretty much looks like I'm sitting in an invisible chair and now my thighs are sore so I know I worked something I just want to make sure I worked my butt, because I mean that's what I'm trying to build so I guess my question here is even though the squats aren't making my ass sore are they still working?
