Female condoms (spermicide)

So my best friend and her boyfriend don't use condoms, and she is also not on birth control. She uses a spermicide jelly thing before and after they have sex. (The kind you insert like a tampon) they had a pregnancy scare once and she turned out fine...but I'm worried that this stuff doesn't work as well as they think it does. Please comment with your experiences!
