Postpartum preeclampsia

Stephanie
I wanted to share what I just recently went through. I had a normal delivery via c section with no complications and went home after 2 days. 5 days post partum I noticed I was having elevated blood pressure, averaging 150s/100s. I went to the OB and she said we would just keep an eye on it. Well, 8 days post partum I had just fallen asleep and I was woken up by an extreme dizzy feeling and I checked my blood pressure and it was 202/135 so my husband called an ambulance. I was taken to the hospital and my BP slowly came down on its own to 140s/100s. Doctors decided to admit me and give me the 24 hour magnesium treatment. My OB came to see me the following morning and diagnosed me with postpartum preeclampsia. The magnesium treatment was hell but it saved my life. My blood pressure returned to normal and has stayed low since being discharged after 2 days in the hospital. Hopefully it'll stay that way! In those 2 days in the hospital I lost 9 pounds (they didn't let me eat for the first 24 hours of the treatment) and I suspect it was all water weight since I was peeing like crazy.
Moral of the story: I know we all want to focus on our newborns postpartum but don't forget to take care of yourself too!!
