Pregnancy book recommendations

Laura

Hi All,

My husband and I just found out we're pregnant and are still a bit shocked. We talked about trying, but didn't really expect it to happen. At least not so soon.

Anyway, I'm feeling a bit lost here and am the type of person who needs to read everything and anything on a topic. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the plethora of pregnancy books out there. Are there any books you lovely ladies recommend that helped you out? Or any you would suggest to avoid?

Any help is much appreciated. So much love to you all.

Hi, Laura! I am reading 3 different ones and I like them!- What to Expect When You Are Expecting (really complete and informative),- The Girlfriend's Guide To Pregnancy (funny and light while informative but not complete),- The Pregnancy Countdown Book (short informative messages for each day of pregnancy).I also bought The Complete Book of Mother and Baby care but thought it is a little bit out of date... But like ir in general.Good lucky! Please do tell us about the ones you bought! I want more tips on books too!Bye

Thanks for the suggestions! I went with the Mayo Clinic's Guide and The Expectant Father at the store today. There will be more bought in the near future!

Not sure on anything for moms, but my wife got me The Expectant Father and I absolutely love it! I feel engaged in the pregnancy because I understand (from a completely educational viewpoint, not physically speaking) what she is going through.

I just bought this for hubby. He's already quoting from it, so I think it was a good buy!

I have Ina May's guide to childbirth, Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, and The Expectant Father for dad.

That's so awesome! My partner reads the book in real time so he's following along with the pregnancy as it progresses.

We picked it up today and he's already quoting from him. What have I unleashed? 😂

You bet! It's not one of those condescending ones that refers to dads as babysitters or stupid dudes either. He likes having something by men for men.

I loved What to Expect When Expecting. I also just finished The Informed Parent, which presents the latest research on topics from pregnancy through the preschool age. Super interesting and informative!

So I'm not pregnant yet but like to be prepared. I've heard the mayo clinic pregnancy book is better than what to expect so I got that last week. I really like it so far. Plan to get what to expect when I'm actually pregnant so that I have both!

I really liked "Expecting Better", it allowed me to enter my pregnancy with confidence and understanding without the fear that you can sometimes get from the more common books filled with all the things that you're not supposed to do while pregnant which can get really overwhelming. I also love Ina May Gaskin's "Guide to Childbirth". It's the best resource for understanding why and what your body goes through during labor and delivery and is incredibly empowering!

I would add that my husband is reading "Be Prepared" the handbook for Dads and he has found it to be almost insulting in how it insinuates that dads don't actually want to be involved. It's written like its a 1950s guide to fatherhood lol. So that one is NOT recommended! 😊

If you're considering a natural birth, at all, I would strongly recommend Natual Hospital Birth by Cynthia Gabriel - it's, hands down, the best of all the books I got. I'd also second the recommendation for the Mayo Clinic's Guide, rather than What to Expect, as a general, all-encompassing reference book.
