Do you think people in well developed countries like USA, U.K., Australia, Italy, etc., could survive a year in a severely poor country?

I ask this because we are so privelaged. We have air conditioners, heat, cell phones, cars, food, everything we could ever want. So do you think we could survive if it was all taken from us?

I could. I went to a poor part of the Dominican Republic for a spring break service trip and it was AMAZING. We could not get cell phone service, so we couldn't text or call anyone, had no TV and could not get on the internet. They also have a plumbing problem, so you can't flush toilet paper (it goes in the trash) and we were to only flush the toilet when we did a number 2. We also could not drink the water there and had to take 'military showers'. Also, they have siesta from 12pm-2pm, so all of the stores and businesses are closed and people just enjoy one another's company, go to the beach, etc. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. It really made me realize how materialistic we are here in the U.S. and how we value money and our possessions more than we value each other (some of us). It is possible, but people just have to be open-minded and humble themselves.

I know this paragraph is really long, but I really enjoyed myself.

I lived in Argentina for a couple years when I was a teen. The mode of living there involves no A/C, no central heat, elevators with manual doors, more walking/public transport than driving, and really high food prices. When it was cold, we'd use a lighter to turn on a heater that was attached to the wall. It was literally a big red square. The stove was gas, and as opposed to where I lived in the US, this place's pilot light went out at least once a day, requiring one of us to re-light it with a lighter. I've never been singed more often in my life. Lots of places wouldn't have an enclosed shower, and other places had a contraption that consisted of a bucket that hung above your head, which would dispense however much water you'd heated up beforehand with the pull of a chain. Stray dogs owned the streets (they liked to be fed rare steaks) and poor children begged at every corner (you won't have enough pesos to help them all). We did okay.

I'll be honest, here is Australia there are a lot of rude selfish people (not all people obviously, but I've met a pretty large number of them). We would probably die from hunger from hogging food.

I think some people could. I've been to a small village in Ukraine 3 times for missions trips and it's seriously like going back 100 years. Horse and buggy or walking for transportation. They used horses and plows and scythes (which are actually kind of hard), got water from the well and heated it up for a short shower, one small convenience type of store. Shura (the pastors wife) had broken her back and because they were poor she laid on a bed in the hospital for months and her back fused together wrong so now she can't sit down. She lays in the back of a horse cart to get around, the pastor had to build a seat high enough on the outhouses for her to be able to lean against so she could go- every other out house except for the pastors house and the church had a hole in the ground to aim for. Huge eye opening experience and it truly makes you grateful for everything we have in the US.

I want to say yes. But unless you've experienced it you just can't know. I went to visit my grandad in a remote part of the juggle in Trinidad where he does research. I thought I was going to die. My cousin and I held each other and cried in the middle of a dirt road. We were so hot. I thought I was going to die, the best part is that we were there for one day. 
I love the outdoors, camping... But this is completely different.

I think anyone could survive a year in a less developed country, it would probably be really good for most of us. I mean- is the choice is survive or die? If the choice is survive or go home I'm sure plenty of people would give up and go home.

Let's face it, there are already large numbers of people in severely poor countries who aren't going to survive to the end of this year. Pretty sad, isn't it?
