To be christened, do you need to have Godparents in a Christian church?

If so, how many? Can we the parents be them too? We only have 1 person to be a Godmother, is that enough? Do we need them at all for the ceremony? Thank you.

Usually you just need one. The idea used to be they you picked someone who would take your child if something happened to you and your spouse. Nowadays it's mainly symbolic but the idea is someone who will encourage them in their Christian upbringing.

Our church doesn't recognize godparents, nor do they require a sponsor from the congregation. They leave it on the parents to raise the child in the faith, and the congregation to pray over the child.

No you can't be them yourself. All you need is one Godmother and one Godfather, and yes they need to be present at the ceremony

Catholic vs. Protestant is different. And depending on what Protestant church if you decide on that. You don't always need Godparents it could just be you and your SO
