Marriage because of a baby?

Question

My brother in law got married to his GF of less than a year because she got pregnant (she's Christian if that makes a difference). Now after a year of marriage they hate each other and are getting a divorce. How do you ladies feel about getting married just because of a baby? I'm just curious I don't mean to offend anyone.

Speeding up something that was already in the works? Sure. But marriage just because a baby's coming is a bad idea. Put that energy into working on being good, civil co-parents.

As a practicing Catholic with a vey religious family I understand why people get married because of a baby. But I personally wouldn't do it. I'd keep the baby or give it up for adoption depending on the situation but I wouldn't marry the father. If we'd been together a long time and we were already talking about getting married and all that then yes I probably would- but if this happened in my relationship right now (we've been together 5 months) I wouldn't marry him. I don't want to end up unhappy in a marriage and I don't want a divorce so I'd rather have a baby out of wedlock then get both my baby and my SO and myself stuck in an unhappy family.

Never a good idea-- marriage and parenthood aren't the same thing. Marriage should only be entered into because both parties love each other and want to spend their lives together. Most of the people I've seen marry because of a baby end up divorced.

Just by observing, it usually doesn't pan out. one of my roommates from college (who I never got along with) is in that exact situation. she got pregnant from a guy she had only been dating for 3 months. her family is super Catholic so now they are engaged to each other.

In the back of my head I just have to wonder how that's actually going to work out.

I was actually married to someone I dated for 4 years (married for 2-together for 6 years in total..no kids thank god) we got divorced last year basically Bc he was racking up secret credit card debt and selling my jewelry and and other personal belongings on eBay without my knowledge or consent. I started dating my current boyfriend very soon after I left my ex.. Who for some reason thinks I left him for my current boyfriend and not because he's a pathological liar. Whatever. I've known my current boyfriend for 12 years. I'm going to be 30 this year. Me and my current boyfriend dated very casually during college.. Went out on some dates, made out here and there off an on for about 4 years never anything serious because he was a big partier and I wasn't about that life. This time around were both grown ups and have a serious discussion before dating and how we were going to do this "for real" this time. We dated for 3 months and I got pregnant. I'm currently 6 months pregnant so we've been together now for 9 months. We will get married before the end of the month mainly because I lost my insurance at the beginning of the month. We talked about getting married before we knew I was pregnant and we won't tell anyone we're married because we want to have a real wedding next summer.  He's honesty the love of my life and we would be getting married either way. I'm not an emotional person but I honestly never knew I could feel this way about another person. I think maybe my case is a little different but I bet everyone thinks like that about their situation. Side note: my ex got a girl he met on tinder pregnant after knowing her for a month and he married her... I wonder if that will last 😂

I don't agree with it. Emotions run high when you are pregnant and jumping in after not knowing someone that long is most of the time a recipe for disaster. My SIL got married to a guy she met 3 months before they got married and she was 8 months pregnant at the time to another guy. She got pregnant to him after about a year. Now she is still married to him but is living with another guy and just had his child. She has three daughters to three different guys. I can't even imagine the conversation she will have to tell them this.

I got pregnant 8 months into our official relationship. We had been talking off and on before we actually started going out on dates. We got married when I was 7 months pregnant, but we had been talking about it for over a year. We just celebrated our 2 year anniversary.  I agree with others on here that say speeding something up that was already in progress is probably okay, but just because she is pregnant is not a good reason to decide to get married.

My husband and I basically got married because of our baby. My family is Christian and they wanted us to wait but his family pushed us to get married. Oddly enough before we even knew were pregnant we discussed how we wanted to spend our lives with each other. We moved in with each other 3-4 weeks after we met/started dating, got married on the anniversary of moving in with each other. I was 5 months pregnant on our wedding day. We are going on 4 years with baby number 2 on the way. We had a point in our marriage were we almost got a divorce but we realized how much we really love each other after some time apart. Sometimes things have to work out on their own without people constantly saying negative things to you about that person. To find out why you fell in love with them in the first place. But a baby makes things harder and really tests your relationship.  Best of luck for everyone.

I highly disagree. Marriage should be a decision based on the love of 2 people who want to spend their lives together. You shouldn't get married just because you're going to have a baby. That should not be a factor in the decision to get married. The best thing to do is ask each other if they would be getting married if there was no baby?

My husband got his highschool girlfriend pregnant 10 years ago. They had only been together for 2 months when she got pregnant and her parents forced them to get married or they wouldn't let them live together (they were 17). They got divorced less than one year after they got married and they still can't stand each other.
