Complicated question...
Ok this is quite long! Sorry!! Background: son has a tongue tie and a high palate and we had been nursing with a shield exclusively. He was doing great until day 3 when he went quite a while without a wet diaper and like any first timers, we freaked and went to our pediatrician. She suggested we get some formula in him asap because she thought he looked a little yellow and dehydrated. Flash forward 24 hrs and we've filled him with formula and I started pumping to get him some breast milk and to work on my supply. I'd rather not pump all the time and I currently don't make enough milk to satisfy him. I've tried to get him to latch back on but he doesn't seem to be having it.
This leads to a bunch of questions!! Has anyone had an experience like this? Using the shield and then bottle feeding and then having trouble getting baby to latch again? What worked for you to get baby to latch? Were you able to? If not, how often should i be pumping to not only build my supply but to empty both breasts and not cause engorgement? Right now I'm only getting an ounce total after pumping both sides every 3-4 hrs. Baby is eating around 2.5 oz at each feeding. Also, since I'm starting out behind, is there any way to catch up and get ahead?? I'd rather not be strapped to a pump because it's quite uncomfortable but you gotta do when you gotta do!
