Any feedback in having your 3 yr old present when you give birth? I don't have family here so I don't have anyone to watch him while I'm in labor. Any feedback would be helpful thanks!

Studies show that children who are exposed to both life and death are the most emotionally healthy now and later on in life. If my kids wanna be there they may be and I won't stop them. I'd rather they be prepared then scarred because they weren't prepared. There's a lot worse out there that they could be exposed to.

Especially for a vaginal birth...why not?! I mean he/she can maybe try to be outta view of your vagina when you're crowning (maybe that would scare him) but I don't see anything wrong with it

I'm just curious, not a rude comment. But while you're in labor, like in the hospital bed and pushing exc, who will be watching him in the room? I'm a nurse & at my hospital our policy is that if the patient has their own children in the room with them there has to be another adult watching the child in the room at all times. The reasons are for safety. Like we wouldn't want little ones unplugging important equipent or touching things they shouldn't.

When I was born my sister was 3 1/2 and was in there feeding my mom ice being such a good big sister! She was the only one who knew I as a girl everyone else thought I was a boy! My moms experience makes it sound like a really positive thing. Is your 3 year old a boy or girl? Girls really understand that's stuff better

Check your hospital. No kids under a certain I age (I believe 5) can be in the delivery room or even afterwards to visit in some (like mine). I would just get a baby sitter who can be on a sort of standby your last week. Have her/him watch the child before hand to see if they are compatible and go from there.

I think it depends on the child and hospital policy. It's possible they may not let them in there and you will be stuck searching for childcare while in labor. It might be a good idea to check out care.com and interview a few sitters so that you have some options and someone you feel comfortable with. Then check with the hospital to see what is allowed overnight and if the sitter would be okay with bringing him to you. Do you have any friends that may be willing to help you?? Good luck!

Personally i advise against it. I have an 8 yr old and thankfully i decided against having him there at the birth. I ended up having complications at delivery. My son got stuck, they couldnt get him out and when they eventually did i had hemorrhaged. It looked like a murder scene in the room. My mum and partner were both crying and scared for myself and our baby. My son came in once it had settled down but there was still alot of blood and it scared the hell out of him. Im glad he wasnt there to witness the actual birth.

Will someone be there to help with him while your there? My god daughter was in the room with her sisters birth at the time. It kind of traumatized her hearing her mom yell and seeing all the blood! It took her about an hr after the baby was born to come back around! Every child is different so it really just depends. I don't see anything wrong with it, I would just make you can try to have someone there to help with him just in case!

If you are at the hospital they will likely ask that there be someone to attend the child which has to do with keeping them safe as there is equipement and sterile fields with sharps on them and i know the one i work at will not let them stay overnight out of respect for other families if you are in a double room.
