Does it only detect ovulation on the exact day and ive missed it or have I not ovulated yet?

Last cycle, period didnt arrive till day 38. Its my first time using ovulation sticks which I started cycle day 16, its now 23 and I'm just getting a very faint line. According to apps, my fertile week just ended yesterday...

These apps estimate. My cycle is irregular so I started testing CD9 to be safe. The tests detect your surge which is about 12-36 hours before ovulation. The ones with the lines also go off the average woman and what her levels are at for a surge. I could never get a true positive in them so I switched to ClearBlue Digital that gives you low, high, and peak fertility. Those go off the increases of LH that YOUR body produces and not what the average person has at the time of peak. I would suggest switching for next cycle, but you may or may not have missed it this time. Keep testing since you have a long cycle.

Answer

The opk picks up a surge of your Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The surge happens right before you ovulate. It could be anywhere from 12 to 48 hours later.  If you haven't gotten a surge, keep testing. When I see a line starting to get darker, I would test twice a day just so you don't miss it.
