Sudden discontinuation of antidepressants

My DF has just decided to stop taking his antidepressants and I'm pretty worried. He didn't like the side effects so just hasn't taken them for afew days. The box has a label saying not to stop cold turkey because they are known to cause suicidal withdrawal symptoms. He's been pretty irritable and moody and he's also not been able to sleep. I'm thinking about calling our doctor for advice but I don't know if our doctor would even discuss it with me since we're not married. We always see him together so he knows we're a couple but I don't know if the doctor patient confidentiality would mean he can't. What would you do?
