Baby dreadlocks

Hey so my niece who is one got a dreadlock in her hair.. She never lets us brush her hair and is super messy so I'm not surprised, we just ended up cutting it out but how did that happen?! We give her nightly baths so I don't really know why she got one, anyone else's kids get this?
