Long distance relationship?

I'm from Michigan and I came to live with my friend here in California for the summer and I've been talking to this guy for a while now and we really connect and he's a great guy. Thing is, I'm leaving in another month to go back and live in Michigan and he lives here in Cali. I've never done a LDR before, so I just wanted to see if any of you have or what you think. I feel like I can do it because I like to have my own space and everything but I also like having that one person at the end of the day to call and talk to etc without physically giving up so much time so I feel like a LDR would be okay but I'm not sure since Cali to MI is over 3,000 miles away...
