Did you know what career you wanted as a high school senior?

Question

I am a senior and have applied to the college I want to attend and took my ACT test. Although, I don't know exactly what kind of career I want yet. I told this to my business teacher and she told me that's very embarrassing and heartbreaking to hear. She actually hurt me and made me feel bad about my future. Did you ladies know right away what you wanted to do and how did you figure it out? Thank you! <3

I knew I always wanted to be a teacher...4 years into it and I realized I was very wrong...started my MBA and got on a management track at a regional bank...hate both...now considering going back to school and doing something completely different. Nothing like three massive career changes before you are thirty!

I knew the general field I wanted to go into ever since I took AP Psychology in high school. I was a psychology major and a sociology minor.  I'm now in grad school to get my masters in psychology. 
That being said most ppl I knew in high school, college or some even now have no idea what they really want to do. College is for finding yourself and for figuring it out. Don't stress too much about it right now. Just study hard and explore your interests. You are right on track for where you should be.

I only figured it out after getting into college. Thought I wanted to be a writer because it is something that comes naturally and easily for me. Then I got bored and completely turned things around and became a math major. Math and statistics isn't easy for me, but it interests me in a way nothing else ever did. I am still surprised at the direction I took.
You don't have to have it figured out so young.

I wanted to do "something with math & science"  So I became a civil engineer.

I'm 33 now and would like to change careers completely - maybe work with people... or learn computer programming...

It's easier & less expensive if you know what you want to do, so take some time for soul-searching & researching careers.

But ignore that rude lady - she's probably miserable in her own career & takes it out on people!

I didn't know what I wanted to be until I was 20 and the army told me...lol. they gave me 3 choices and I picked the one with the longest school. Biomedical equipment technician. I work on the medical equipment at a hospital. I could have been a nurse or a hum vee mechanic.

I love my job and make good money, (been doing it for 13 years) but at times I consider going back to school to become a hospice nurse.

Yep. I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do... and plunged forward and failed spectacularly at nursing school. After a major change and another dead end toward a master's in social work I finally completed a master's in psychology to be a therapist... the one exact thing I said I would never be turned out to be the thing that makes me happier than I can say! But... I'll be paying a lot of money for a very long time because of all the dead ends. It's perfectly FINE that you don't know what you want to do yet! Save your money and get your general ed classes out of the way (there's no shame in community college, either).  Take them from a wide variety of areas and you'll figure out where you're going... probably much faster than all of your friends who (like me) will be super locked in to a single unrealistic idea!

People change their minds, she sounds like a cranky lady. Becoming "someone", changing the world, making a difference, and making people smile are all beautiful and realistic goals. Follow your heart, even if it changes paths- and forget what she said.
