Hair dye?

Question

Anyone still dying their hair? I've heard mixed messages on whether it's okay. I have always  highlighted my hair and it's grown out so my roots are really obvious. I'm in a wedding in a few weeks and can't decide what to do. In general i try to minimize chemicals - eating organic, using natural sunscreens, etc - but hair color has always been my guilty pleasure!

Read the book "Expecting Better" which references the actual scientific studies that suggest certain things like hair dye are/aren't dangerous during pregnancy to get the facts so you can make the right decision for you!

I would ask your doctor, not your hair stylist. I did both and my OB said NO do not do that in the first trimester at all. My hair stylist said yes. Hair stylists aren't qualified to make that kind of call for you. I do feel you- I'm a platinum blonde so the roots suck. I found some root powder with great reviews I'm going to try until I'm in the second trimester. Good luck!

I've been holding off as long as I can....regrowth is like 5cm now! My doctor actually laughed at me and said of course you can dye your hair but I've read a lot of research on it...

My friend worked in a salon as a hair dresser up to 38 weeks and dyed her hair throughout (part of her job to look good). Her baby is 18 month old little smarty pants with no issues.

So I've been torn. I think I'm going to just do it today. Only the one time in first trimester and with a dye that has no ammonia and is 60% made of flower oil.

I'm 10 weeks so not in early early stages.

Most info I've gotten say it is okay just not super often because of inhaling the fumes, so do it in a well ventilated area and maybe wear one of those paper masks like doctors wear if its going to be a super long process. But it should definitely be okay

Ok update- my previous "OB" was a nurse practitioner, and I recently switched to a new office. My new OB said, it is a myth about not being able to dye your hair. I'm getting highlights as I type this. I'm 9 weeks and all is well with the baby! Anyone else have their OB say it is fine? Weird how much the opinions vary, but I totally trust my new Dr.

Hair dye goes onto your scalp and sinks in to your skin. Highlights are applied to the hair and covered with foil (and typically aren't painted all the way to the scalp). If you get highlights it should be fine. My hairstylist said she's comfortable doing highlights after the 1st trimester but she never recommends getting full color (dye) during pregnancy since the chemicals sit on your scalp.

I am a hairstylist so I touch smell etc haircolor all day lol I don't color my hair in the first trimester because with your hormones going crazy and trying to get on track your hair color can come out a whole different color and yes even with highlights lol I will be back to coloring my hair once I hit 2nd trimester.

My OB said to wait until I was through with 1st trimester to get hair highlighted. I usually get done every 6 weeks. So 2 more weeks to go and boy, does mine need it! 😝

I've heard that highlights are fine, but a few years back they were saying absolutely no dye...i see my OB next week and I'll be asking her because my roots are annoying me so bad! Plus I work in a salon, so the girls keep wanting to fix it. I'm hoping she'll say go for it!

I'm getting my roots done in a couple weeks.(I will be 10.5 weeks bt then) My OB wrote a book for his patients and it says that perms, relaxers, and coloring is safe during pregnancy as long as it is well ventilated.  Will still check but I don't think it is going to be a problem  problem.
