Laundry detergent for baby? 👶🏻💦

Is it really necessary to use baby detergent or free and clear detergent etc? Something I just read said to "wash everything in the house with baby detergent before baby arrives." What!? We normally use tide but I could maybe switch to a non scented, allergy free one. But baby detergent is $$!? Any advice?

We use All; Free and Clear on all our clothes. We started this when I was pregnant with my son. When we tried using anything else, or even any kind of fabric softener, he would break out in a rash. We even bought a small travel sized bottle for when we visited family. You could spend the $ on baby detergent, but I find All Free and Clear works for us and I can use it on everyone's clothes. I washed baby's clothes separate for the first year, because of chemicals on other clothes; from deodorant to perfume to whatever we may have picked up. But I could still wash everything in All. Plus I liked that when we cuddled baby baby smelled US and not detergent. You know, good for bonding, when not doing skin-to-skin.

We switched to All Free and Clear until we decide our son wasn't particularly sensitive. Then we started adding gain dryer sheets, and then switched back to gain all together. It was just kind of a natural progression. But I would definitely start with something free and clear!

PUREX BABY!!!!!! It smells AMAZING! And is 1/3 of the cost of Dreft!!! I kid you not. It's hard to find but my local grocery store carries it. My son is 3.5 and we still use it for ALL of our laundry and my mom started using it because it smells so good!!!

I'm on my 4th and with all I used my regular detergent after I used the baby detergent that I got for my first baby shower. That stuff went fast. It was gone before baby even came. If you have detergent allergies or hubby does then I may stick to something different. If not I wouldn't worry about it.

My grandma actually gave me a recipe for my own gentle detergent. I spent under $20 for the ingredients, and you only use about a tablespoon or 2 per load so it lasts way longer and is really cheap in the long run. It doesn't have any fragrances, and it doesn't create suds, and it's about the equivalent of a baby detergent.

Here's the parts list:
2 cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda
1 cup baking soda
2 bars of Zote Soap or Castille Soap (you can find all the ingredients in the laundry aisle)
And any essential oil you want (completely optional)

All you have to do is grate the bar soap and mix the other ingredients in a storage container. I ran mine through a blender to get a blended detergent look, but that's really optional.

We already use the nonscented laundry detergent bc my husband has sensitive skin. My mom also said I did as a baby so I feel like the baby will also. I feel like it's a good idea anyways just so you don't end up having to rewash everything if you find out afterwards.

We already use tide free and gentle because my husband has sensitive skin. Im just planning to wash baby's clothes in the tide we already use. Since is free and gentle it should be okay for us, and all of our stuff is already washed in it. Our twin nephews have super sensitive skin and the tide free and gentle works well for them. I don't think it's necessary to buy baby specific detergent.
